How to identify a comic book from its cover

A cover contains many of the clues needed to begin identifying a comic. Here is what to look for before you search.

Start with the issue number and cover date

Check the cover, indicia, or barcode area for the title, issue number, volume, publication date, and publisher. A series can restart its numbering, so the volume and date matter as much as the number.

Look for edition clues

Variant covers, printings, newsstand copies, direct editions, and reprints can look similar at first glance. Compare logos, cover prices, barcode markings, and small notes near the credits.

Use a clear cover photo
